EDITOR’S NOTE: We’re doing a series on recruitAbility employees’ first jobs and the lessons they learned. Below we hear from Jared Butler, sales development representative at recruitAbility. To read other posts in this series, click here.
My first job was as a lifeguard at the local pool I swam at in Rockwall, Texas. I was 16 years old, and I earned $10 per hour, which wasn’t bad at the time. I worked there for two years.
My duties included making sure everyone in the pool was OK and that the pool deck was kept clean and safe. Pretty quickly, I learned how to take responsibility because we were held accountable for anything that happened, and technically, there were lives in my hands.
One time, I saved a kid after they hit their head on the diving board. Luckily for both of us, they were still conscious and all I had to do was pull them out of the water. They didn’t have any serious injuries, just a minor cut on their head that I tended to.
That taught me that even though my job was usually a lot of fun, I had to take it seriously. If I had just assumed it would always be easy and nothing would ever go wrong, I would not have done well. Things happen out of the blue, and you have to be prepared for the worst at all times. I matured a lot.
My favorite part of being a lifeguard was being at the pool and seeing everyone have a good time. That’s still true now in my role at recruitAbility. Part of my job is placing people in new roles that will better their lives, so I like making people happy. For most people, their careers play a big part in their overall happiness, so it’s fun to help people level-up in their professional lives.
My least favorite part of lifeguarding was waking up at 4 a.m. when I had the morning shift. But overall, it was a great first job and learning experience.
I have taken lessons I learned from being a lifeguard into my job at recruitAbility. Lifeguarding showed me the importance of clear communication and teamwork, even under pressure. Understanding that serves me well to this day.
