Principal R&D Engineer

We are seeking a highly accomplished Senior Principal Engineer to join an advanced Research & Development team focused on next-generation Hard Disk Drive (HDD) technologies. The role centers on developing cutting-edge storage solutions with a particular emphasis on areal density-related innovations. The ideal candidate will bring extensive technical expertise, leadership, and a proven track record of contributions to the HDD industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and integration of areal density-related technologies into HDD systems.

  • Collaborate closely with global R&D teams to integrate new Head/Media/Read/Write (RW) technologies.

  • Serve as a key technical liaison with manufacturing groups and external suppliers, including Head/Media and Read Channel partners.

  • Conduct detailed failure analysis, prototyping, and evaluation to improve system performance.

  • Identify technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement continuous process improvements.

  • Drive prototyping and testing activities, including:

    • Building proof-of-concept systems in collaboration with engineering teams.

    • Evaluating critical performance metrics such as areal density, thermal stability, write/read reliability, and lifespan.

    • Iterating on designs and processes based on test results.

  • Foster cross-functional and supplier collaboration to ensure seamless integration and development.

Requirements

  • Experience: 15+ years of directly applicable experience in HDD technologies.

  • Technical Expertise:

    • Strong fundamentals in HDD architecture and related technologies.

    • Proven background in integrating new Head/Media/RW technologies.

    • In-depth knowledge of areal density processes within HDD manufacturing.

  • Skills:

    • Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities.

    • Comfortable working in a co-located, multidisciplinary team environment.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required.

  • Master’s or PhD in a related field strongly preferred.
