Project Engineer, Traffic

Our client is a consulting firm with a strong reputation in traffic engineering and transportation solutions, serving urban, suburban, and rural communities. The company focuses on enhancing transportation systems through innovative, safe, and technology-driven improvements across various modes of travel including highway, transit, pedestrian, and bicycle networks.
As the firm continues to expand its successful traffic engineering practice, they are seeking an experienced Traffic Project Engineer to join their growing team in Fairfax, Virginia. This role is ideal for a motivated and collaborative individual with 6 to 10 years of relevant experience who is eager to contribute to impactful projects while advancing their career in a flexible and rewarding environment.
What YOU get to DO at this growing company:

Perform traffic engineering tasks including transportation planning studies, safety and operations analysis, and preliminary design development.

Produce and present high-quality technical reports and traffic studies to clients and stakeholders.

Prepare design plans and documentation for traffic control devices, including signals, signage, pavement markings, ITS, lighting, and temporary traffic control.

Apply traffic analysis tools such as HCS, SIDRA, Synchro/SimTraffic, and VISSIM to simulate and evaluate transportation network performance.

Support multimodal transportation projects across a wide range of travel modes and geographic contexts.

Stay informed on industry advancements, policies, and technologies to apply best practices.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical and innovative engineering solutions.

Engage with clients through in-person and virtual presentations.
What you NEED to SUCCEED in this challenging role:

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field, Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and/or PTOE certification is a plus.

Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.

Minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience in traffic engineering.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical audiences.

Strong working knowledge of Highway Safety Manual, Highway Capacity Manual, and AASHTO guidelines.

Proficiency in traffic software tools: HCS, SIDRA, Synchro/SimTraffic, and VISSIM.

Experience in travel demand forecasting is preferred.
