Traffic Design Engineer

Our client is a growing consulting firm known for delivering high-quality traffic engineering and design services across the Mid-Atlantic. With a strong portfolio of VDOT and municipal projects, the firm is seeking a Traffic Design Engineer to support ongoing transportation infrastructure initiatives from their Fairfax, Virginia office. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about improving traffic operations through smart, effective design solutions.
What YOU get to DO at this growing company:

Produce detailed traffic design plans including signals, signage, pavement markings, and temporary traffic control (TTC/MOT) for VDOT and local municipalities.

Support traffic operations studies and conceptual designs for a wide range of transportation projects.

Apply technical software such as Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, and AutoCAD to analyze traffic patterns and design solutions.

Collaborate closely with project managers and senior engineers to ensure quality, timeliness, and compliance with standards.

Participate in field visits, data collection, and construction support as needed.

Assist in preparing technical documentation, reports, and specifications for submittals.

Stay current with traffic design standards and guidelines from VDOT, MUTCD, and AASHTO.
What you NEED to SUCCEED in this challenging role:

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.

4–8 years of traffic design experience, preferably in the Virginia market.

Proficiency in Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and AutoCAD; VISSIM and SIDRA experience is a plus.

Familiarity with VDOT design standards and experience with TTC/MOT plans.

EIT certification required; P.E. license (or ability to obtain within 12 months) strongly preferred.

Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
