My Guiding Principles in Every Search
Recruiting is one of those careers that quietly shapes you. It pushes you to develop instincts, philosophies and values you didn’t even know you had. After years in hyper-growth startups, a few RIFs of my own and now agency life where I work with candidates and clients across the map, I’ve learned this:
How you recruit says a lot about who you are. Not just how you source or interview, but how you communicate, how you prioritize and how you treat people when no one is watching.
Over time, three values have become my anchors. These guide how I show up in every search I run.
1. Humanity First
The past few years have made this even clearer. I talk with candidates impacted by RIFs almost every week. And because I’ve been through it myself, I understand how disorienting it can feel.
Humanity shows up in small ways. Checking in without an agenda. Answering questions others rush past. Treating every conversation like it matters, because it does.
Even when I can’t place someone, I want them to walk away feeling seen, respected and supported.
2. Clarity Creates Trust
People don’t need perfect answers. They need honest ones.
I’m straightforward about timelines, expectations and what I know or don’t know. I won’t leave someone hanging, and I won’t overpromise to make a situation feel better in the moment. Clear communication reduces anxiety for candidates and strengthens alignment with clients.
Trust grows every time you choose clarity over convenience.
3. Sustainable Pace, Consistent Presence
After working in environments where everything was urgent, I’ve learned that steady always beats frantic. Consistency builds stronger pipelines. It creates better partnerships. It keeps the work human instead of reactive.
A sustainable approach makes room for thoughtful conversations, better fits and long-term relationships.
Why These Values Matter
Recruiting isn’t just filling roles. It’s guiding people through change, supporting teams during growth and helping organizations make decisions that truly shape their future.
When humanity, clarity and consistency guide the process, hiring becomes more than a transaction. It becomes a partnership built on trust, understanding and long term impact.
